If you’re designing your own website, there are a number of key aspects that you need to get perfect – including design and functionality – to ensure your site is built for success. In this field, we love to be creative – but why reinvent the wheel? Your customers know what a standard menu looks like and where it is located and making any drastic changes can cause confusion. If you want to put your own stamp on it, stick to changing the colours and fonts.

As the saying goes, ‘Keep it Simple, Silly’. This is as true for as it is for everything else. Your navigation bar is meant to be the starting point for your customers, allowing them to easily find information themselves. Simply saying ‘Products’ or ‘Services’ doesn’t offer potential customers much insight into where the link will take them. You can be concise whilst still providing valuable information – for instance, ‘products’ can be replaced with ‘Pool Styles’, whilst ‘services’ can become ‘Maintenance’.

  1. Be responsive

These days, there is simply no excuse not to create a responsive website – and that extends to your navigation. A standard menu is far too wide for a mobile screen, so a drop down, or hamburger menu, is a common solution. Failing to be responsive won’t just impact your customers; major search engines will penalise websites who don’t work on mobiles and tablets, resulting in a loss of rankings.

  1. Include a search bar

Last but not least, your should include a search bar. This means your customers can still quickly find information, even if it isn’t obviously listed within your menu – the alternative is that they have to visit every single page of your site, which will likely cause them to give up.
